Valentine’s day is the perfect day to show your appreciation for your significant other and exchange some thoughtful gifts. Gender neutrally, glasses are the perfect gift because it’s (more or less) the first thing people see when they look at you. For all you guys out there, we know that chocolates and flowers may be way too typical in this day and age and you’re constantly having to come up with new ways to impress her. Glasses are the ideal gift because it’s very personal and it shows that you took the time out to find that perfect pair for your significant other.
For ladies, we know how strenuous it can be when shopping for him. The first thing you need to identify when shopping for a pair of glasses is the type of category he falls into. For instance, if he’s the fashionista, you may want to look into a frame that is more stylish and has a little more detail. (Ex: Gucci, Tom Ford, Versace, etc) For the sporty guys who are always outdoors, you should focus your attention more on durabilitiy. It’s also good to consider looking into a polarized pair for comfort, visibility and glare reduction or perhaps a wrap type of frame to increase coverage. (Ex: Oakley, Maui Jim, Rayban)
For the single people out there, Valentine’s day is not only for couples. It’s a time to celebrate love, love between a couple, love between your friends, your family and most importantly, loving yourself. So go ahead and treat yourself to something nice.

I’ve heard countless stories of miracles, wonders, phenomenas and people who possess extremely gifted talents, but this one really took my breath away. I was browsing the web one day and came across a painting. Although it was nice, it wasn’t anything spectacular or captivating. I’ve seen hundreds of more artistic and better paintings than the one I came across, but was really shocked to find out that it was painted by a blind artist. My initial reactions were, “How can that be? How is this possible?” and naturally, I wanted to learn more about this artist.

Esref Armagan was born blind and into an impoverished family on 1953 in Istanbul, Turkey. As a child, he never received schooling or proper training; instead, he taught himself how to paint and write through the use of his hands and inner feelings. Esref begins his work with an outline of his drawing created through the use of a braille stylus. From that, he applies oil paint onto the drawing with his fingers and “feels” his way around the painting. He often states that he needs to feel that he’s “inside” the painting for him to paint it. The paintings can take up to months before completion because he applies only one colour at a time (to avoid smearing), which results in two to three day periods of waiting before another colour can be applied.

I think each one of us can take away something after reading about Esref. To me, he represents hope. Often when something goes wrong, many of us will take the easy way out and give up. Giving up is the easiest way out because it gives us an excuse to not do anything about our existing problems. Even though he was born unsighted, his determination and unfailing attitude has garnered him immense success and respect. I think his story gives us a bit of a reality check and keeps us grounded. We often don’t appreciate what we have until we lose it or are faced with stories of people who are less fortunate than ourselves. Being able to see, hear and speak has already made us more fortunate than a lot of people. Although Esref’s story is extraordinary and not often heard of, it symbolizes a bigger picture. Rather than relying on miracles, be your own agent of change. We control our own future. You either give up and let your misfortunes define you, or you overcome it. It’s up to you.
